How to Measure Width for Curtains
1. Measuring the Window:
Measure the width from outside the trim. Add extra room on each side for fabric stack (we recommend 6" per side, or 12" total). Add more if you want a full window view.
2. Measuring the Rod:
Measure the length of the installed curtain rod, excluding the finials.
Header Considerations:
- Casual headers: The fabric lies flat when fully extended. Choose curtains 2x to 2.5x the measured width for proper fullness.
- Pleated headers: Fabric fullness is pre-sewn, so select curtains based on the actual measured width.
Opening Considerations
- One-way open: Purchase the full measured width.
- Center open (pair of panels): Divide the width by 2 for each panel.
Example:
Window from Outside Trim | Extra Room on Each Side | Width to Purchase (Pleated Headers) | Width to Purchase (Casual Headers) |
36" |
6" (12" total) |
48" one-way open or two 24" panels center open | 96" one-way open or two 48" panels center open |
How to Measure Height for Curtains
1. Casual headers (curtain rods):
Measure from the top of the curtain rod to the floor.
2. Pleated headers (clip rings or traverse rods):
Measure from the underside of the rings or carriers to the floor.
Tip: Measure in multiple spots, as floors can be uneven. Use the longest measurement for accuracy.
How High to Install the Rod:
- 2/3rds rule: Mount the rod 2/3rd of the distance between the top of the window and the ceiling. For example, if there's 6 feet above the window, mount the rod 4 feet up.
- Max height: Mount the rod as high as possible or on the ceiling for a dramatic look.
Curtain Drop Styles:
Drop Style | Description | Adjustment |
Kiss the Floor | Curtains just touch the floor for a tailored and polished look. | No adjustment needed. |
1/2" Above Floor | Practical and easy to clean. Curtains hang slightly above the floor for a crisp, neat appearance. | We subtract 1/2" |
Puddle | Curtains "puddle" on the floor for a luxurious, romantic look. Ideal for formal spaces but requires more maintenance. |
We add 2". Optionally, you can request 4" or 6" for a more dramatic effect. |
